![]() ![]() Seriously, if you take nothing else but this wonderful piece of advice from my whole blog, then you'll be ahead of the game. This is the best and greatest advice that I can give you. If something interests you, such as pharmacy or medicine or law, get experience. Granted, not everyone has the luxury of getting pharmacy experience at the age of 15, but you should know that it's never too late for anything. MY ADVICE WHEN EXPLORING A CAREER LIKE PHARMACY I admired these young students and saw myself in their shoes, and it was probably around this time that pharmacy became my career goal. They gave some great advice on what it takes to get into a pharmacy school. A set up private little "mock interviews" with each student, where I got a tremendous amount of Q&A from them. 2 were from one school and the last was from the other, so there were lots of friendly competition between them. Dr.A was a preceptor, so she got me to talk with three candidates. One in particular is a large "top 10" public school that has gotten a ton of recognition. ![]() My hospital served as training sites for 2 pharmacy schools, each well known and respected. Later that summer, I had an awesome opportunity to talk with pharmacy candidates during their clinical rotations. But at least these mundane tasks gave me a unique perspective on what a normal day was like in an inpatient pharmacy of a fairly busy hospital. There were also some boring times, like cleaning up the back room or crediting back unused drugs. It was quite fun actually and it provided a spark that eventually turned into my personal crusade to become a pharmacist. She talked to me about her job and brought me on a few rounds. Several of my mom's friends were staff pharmacists, and one in particular- call her Dr. ![]() Fine, you can call me greedy and ignorant, but at 15 what else would you expect me to care about?! So she got me to volunteer at the hospital's pharmacy during the summer between freshman and sophomore year. Oh, and the really good stuff: how short schooling was and how much they got paid.Haha yeah! I was transfixed by the idea of finishing school with a professional doctorate in only 6 years, and getting paid $80k a year to push pills (the average has risen much higher since then). She told me about what pharmacists do and the importance of their job. That's when my mother, a RN at the local hospital, told me about a career that she thought would be great for me to get into: pharmacy. Still, I kept within the program even though my eyes were on the horizon for something else. There was too much math involved, and became bored too easily from design problems and computer programs. But by the end of my freshman year, I knew engineering was not something that fully grabbed my interest. My childhood passion was with anything with wings, so I planned to become an aerospace engineer. In high school, I enrolled in a magnet engineering program. ![]()
